"Many drugs --
both prescription and over-the-counter -- have the potential to affect
nutritional status. A large number of drugs can alter food intake by decreasing
appetite; by changing the sence of taste; or by causing dry mouth, nausea,
or, in some cases, vomiting. In addition, drugs may interact adversely
with the nutrients we take, ( vitamins, minerals, and food supplements
), reducing absorption, distribution, activation, or utilization, and
possibly increasing nutrient excretion. For this reason, nutrient replacement
can greatly benefit the patient who is taking drugs.
The following table
is a listing of the vitamin and mineral deficiencies that may result when
we take some of the most commonly used drugs, when we smoke, or when we
consume alcoholic beverages on a regular basis. Substances that appear
in parentheses indicate either a second name by which that drug may be
known, or similar drugs in that drug class. In some cases, deficiencies
result only when the drug is used daily or on a long-term basis. These
cases have been noted in the table. Naturally, before increasing your
nutrient intake, you should discuss the proper dosage with your health
care provider.

the antiparkinsonian drugs L-Dopa and Levodopa may be altered by the
intake of B-6 ( pyridozine ) supplements. During therapy with these
drugs, the intake of B-6 should be restricted to less than 5 milligrams.
However, larger doses of B-6 can be given to patients taking Sinemet,
a combination of levodopa and carbidopa. |

When
considering Vitamin and Mineral supplementation, especially with new
breakthru's in technology, knowledge of the effects of such supplementation
is essential. New breakthru's in the absorption of these products, especially
with the effectiveness of Vitamist products, requires professional assistance
when you are currently taking drugs. It is normal for the medical professional,
when prescribing drugs, to monitor their patient for effectiveness of
the drug, and adjust the dossage accordingly. The effectiveness of drugs
many times depends upon age and physical condition. Adding highly effective
vitamin and mineral supplementation such as Vitamist products may enhance
the drugs effectiveness or maybe interfere with the action of the drugs
your are taking
The key
to health and well being can be found in maintaining proper nutritional
foundation, as a deficiency in any of the mineral elements needed in
human nutrition could account for most disease symptoms. The words and
studies of Dr. Linus Pauling attest to this fact. The reality of our
fast food society is that it is very difficult to follow a healthy diet
today, and even more difficult for our body to digest, absorb, and metabolize
the foods we eat into useable elements necessary for proper body function.
The problem is compounded by the many fruits and vegetables that are
are picked green before they absorb the proper nutrients and the fact
that our soil is largely depleted of the essential elements, as documented
by the 1936 Congressional report on the subject.
Since
every disease takes time to develop ( the damage to our bodies ability
to heal itself ), eliminating disease and enabling the body to heal
itself also takes time. Pharmaceutical drugs created in a laboratory
are designed to treat the symptom, in our belief, and more often than
not, cause side effects that range from uncomfortable to severel.
When
we understand that we are not getting the mineral nutrition our bodies
need from the food we eat, we begin to understand the need for mineral
supplementation. Our bodies are made of the same basic minerals that
the earth is made of. Specific minerals facilitate specific functions
in the organs and tissues. As with everything in life, balance is important.
Inadequate or excessive supply of the essential nutrients required for
proper body function can result in a body imbalance leading to a wide
variety of disease. But, the importance of nutritional supplements is
widely recognized in the scientific community and among nutritionally
oriented physicians
